Caucasian Shepherd Dog

Temperament
Fearless, Bold, Kind
[4]Background and human relationship
A large dog associated with Caucasian pastoral work, valued for endurance and climatic adaptation and used across much of the former Soviet Union. JKC notes differences between mountain and steppe types.
[1]Build and coat
A large substantial body and strong bone are characteristic. JKC describes heavier southern Caucasian dogs and relatively lighter, longer-legged steppe dogs, often with shorter coats.
[1]Colour and comparisons
JKC describes grey shades, ginger, straw, white, reddish brown and brindle, including pied and patched coats. Coat length and colour distribution are separate comparisons.
[1]A powerful, watchful guardian
The UKC describes a powerful, strongly muscled, heavy-boned dog. It notes a strong defensive reaction and territorial instinct, with pronounced suspicion toward unfamiliar people and dogs.
[2]A dense double coat in three lengths
All accepted coat lengths have a dense double coat with coarse outer guard hairs and a soft undercoat. The UKC standard recognizes long, intermediate and short lengths, which differ in the mane and leg and tail feathering.
