[2]A farm guardian developed in South Africa
The AKC standard describes the breed as a general farm dog developed for settlers in South Africa from the 17th century, used to defend against predators and track and hold wounded game.
[1]A large, muscular and agile build
The AKC standard describes a large, muscular dog combining strength with agility, an ideal body-length-to-height ratio of 10:9 and a broad, square head. Preferred heights are 24–27 inches for males and 22–25 inches for females; balance and sound movement take precedence over size.
[1]A short glossy coat in several colors
The AKC standard calls for a short, dense, smooth, shiny coat. It permits red, brown, reddish brown, fawn, cream and brindle in accepted colours, and prefers a black mask. White exceeding 33% of the dog, or ticking or spots within the white areas, is a disqualification.
