This large rodent is widespread in the Mindanao faunal region of the Philippines. It has dark upper fur and pale underparts. A Mt. Hamiguitan survey recorded different capture rates at different elevations.
The dark dorsal fur contrasts sharply with underparts that range from yellowish gray to white.
At Mt. Hamiguitan, the 2005–2006 survey caught it most often in regenerating lowland forest at 525 m; its share of captures was lower at 1,128 m.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
