This toucanet occurs along the eastern Andes of Peru and Bolivia. A study of the former broad Emerald Toucanet complex describes black throat and cheek markings and a two-colored band at the bill base for the atrogularis form.
In a specimen-based study, the atrogularis form has black chin, throat, and cheek, with a two-colored band at the bill base. The paper treated it within the broader A. prasinus complex of that period.
The species account lists humid forest, forest edges, second growth, and woodland as habitats.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
