A flightless, nocturnal kiwi that probes the soil and leaf litter with its long bill to find small prey.
Its brownish-gray plumage is finely mottled or banded with white. It has a long pale bill, short dark legs, tiny vestigial wings, and no tail.
By day it rests in a burrow, rock crevice, or hollow log, then emerges at night to forage on foot. It eats mostly earthworms and insect larvae.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
