This rabbit lives in isolated mountain ranges of western Texas and nearby areas. Dense brush and rocky crevices provide cover.
It is a large cottontail with pale buff-gray upperparts, a contrasting iron-gray rump, large ears, rusty legs, and white underparts and tail.
Historical field notes from the Chisos Mountains report that rabbits rested in dense thickets through much of the day, then fed on grasses, leaves, and herbs late in the evening or early morning. They also used rocky crevices as refuges.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
