A hyena of southern Africa's dry regions that is mostly active at night.
Its long, shaggy fur is dark brown to black on the body and tan on the neck and shoulders. Its legs have horizontal stripes.
It forages alone at night and feeds mainly on carrion. It also eats fruit and insects, and its diet varies by habitat.
