It can raise the long hairs along its back and feeds mainly on termites. It occurs in southern Africa, where records include karroid country, grassland and scrub, open savanna woodland, and inland gravel plains.
Long hairs along the upper back form a mane that can be raised to make the animal appear larger when threatened.
It feeds mainly on harvester termites of the genus Trinervitermes. Regional examples name T. trinervoides in South Africa and T. rhodesiensis in Botswana and Zimbabwe.
