This guan lives in humid lowland forests south of the Amazon in Brazil. Its white crest and chestnut neck and breast are distinctive, while detailed records of its behavior and diet remain limited.
Its long white crest has a rufous edge, and the neck and breast are also chestnut. Eye color differs between the sexes.
White-crested Guans are endemic to Brazil south of the Amazon River. They mainly inhabit dense, moist lowland forest, foraging in trees and sometimes on the ground.
Forest conversion and roads can increase access for hunters. Fragmentation also reduces habitat and can impede recolonization.
The species occurs in Amazônia National Park and Gurupi Biological Reserve. Assessment recommendations include forest protection, reduced hunting and trapping, and population research.
IUCN Red List · Vulnerable · Global
Forest conversion and capture for food or captivity are threats. Protecting forest, reducing hunting pressure and researching populations and ecology are recommended.
