The Cauca Guan has dark brown to greenish plumage and a red throat patch. It is found in humid tropical forest remnants in Colombia's Cauca and Magdalena valleys.
Its plumage is dark brown to greenish, with a red area on the throat.
Cauca Guans are endemic to Colombia’s Andes and eat fruit, leaves, flowers and invertebrates. A year-long Otún-Quimbaya study combined feeding observations with dropping analysis.
During October2002–September2003, guans consumed fruit from89 plant species. When fruit was scarce, they gathered in Chinese ash plantations and ate young leaves.
The trees had been planted more than40 years earlier for revegetation, with native vegetation growing underneath. Their foliage provided an additional seasonal food resource.
IUCN Red List (BirdLife listing) · Vulnerable · Global
BirdLife lists Vulnerable. Fragmented Andean forests and seasonal food availability are conservation concerns. Understanding resources across different forest habitats supports conservation planning.
