This small mole is known from the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia. Current MDD uses Euroscaptor malayanus, while a detailed 2008 redescription used the spelling Euroscaptor malayana.
It is small and has dark iron-gray fur. Its short, club-shaped tail has longer hair at the tip but is mostly hidden by the fur. The snout is nearly triangular when viewed from above.
Young Malaysian moles have rounder skulls, whereas older skulls appear flatter as the braincase becomes relatively lower. The zygomatic arches curve inward in juveniles but become straighter and parallel in older specimens.
In the 2008 redescription, researchers estimated age from molar wear and compared these skull differences. One specimen also had reduced second lower premolars on both sides. The collection revealed variation associated with age as well as an individual dental difference.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The 2008 authors suggested that the Cameron Highlands’ cool, humid climate may suit this mole and highlighted it as a conservation concern under global warming. They also proposed further field surveys in Peninsular Malaysia to clarify its distribution.
