This flycatcher is found in the montane forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. Its yellow underparts and dark stripe between the throat and lower cheek are distinctive. It eats fruit and insects and is usually seen in pairs or small family groups.
It is 18–20 cm long, with greenish-olive upperparts, yellow underparts, and a whitish throat. Its mostly dark head has a white eyebrow and cheek stripe, with a partly concealed yellow-to-orange crown stripe.
It uses wet middle-elevation forest at about 800–2,300 m, particularly near streams, roads, and more open forest edges. It is usually seen in pairs or small family groups, taking fruit and insects from leaf and branch surfaces.
