The Black Solitaire occurs in humid forests of the Chocó region of Colombia and Ecuador. Its black plumage contrasts with white cheek and breast tufts and red eyes.
It is deep black, with white cheeks, white pectoral tufts and broad white tips on the outer tail feathers. The upper bill is black, the lower bill orange and the eyes red.
It uses humid cloud forest, forest edges and tall secondary growth. It eats fruits and berries, usually alone or in pairs, but may join small groups or mixed-species flocks.
