The Utah prairie dog is a diurnal squirrel relative of southwestern Utah that forms colonies with extensive underground burrows.
The back is cinnamon-colored, the terminal half of the tail is white, and there is a black spot above each eye and a brown cheek patch. Color alone does not reliably distinguish it from close white-tailed species.
It is active by day and lives in colonies using extensive burrows. It is mostly herbivorous and prefers flowers and seeds, while grass is more commonly available. From November through February it spends much time underground without becoming fully dormant.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
