This tapaculo was described from wet Pacific-slope forest in Ecuador. The paper describes a male type specimen and notes that earlier reports had assigned the species' vocalizations to other tapaculos.
In the male type specimen, the forehead, crown, sides of the nape, and area around the eye are dark gray, with fine blackish feather tips that create a slightly scaled appearance. The center of the back is very dark brown.
In Ecuador, the paper describes its habitat as dense undergrowth in wet, mainly primary forest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
