About 16 cm long, it has an olive-green head, back, wings, and tail. The sexes are similar.
It feeds mainly on arthropods such as beetles and crickets, and also takes berries.
In Costa Rica, it builds a cup nest of moss and long plant fibres in the fork of an understory tree or shrub, lining it with fine rootlets and other material.
In Costa Rica, juveniles have dull grey irides, in contrast to the dark brown irides of adults.
