The male has a blue-grey crown and ear-coverts, a white cheek, and a chestnut upper mantle. A broad chestnut band runs from above the eye around the rear of the ear-coverts, with a black line below it.
It lives in dry, open country, often near villages and cultivated land. It walks on the ground to feed on grain and small seeds; nestlings are also fed insects.
