A large monkey that moves through the forest canopy using long limbs and a grasping tail. It is restricted to Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil.
It has long limbs and a prehensile tail, with a large, rounded belly. Its thick fur ranges from light brown to gold.
The Northern Muriqui lives in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, where records are scattered and parts of its range remain uncertain. Researchers assembled 58 localities from publications, museum specimens and field surveys, then reduced clustered records to 43 spatially independent localities for modelling. They compared those records with climate and elevation to map areas whose conditions could suit the species.
The model estimated that forest remained across about 7.6% of the Northern Muriqui’s reconstructed historical range. It also highlighted forest fragments where unrecorded groups might still occur. Looking beyond known sightings to nearby habitat and forest remnants gives field teams a way to choose where further surveys could be useful.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
