Subspecies hypoleucus ranges from southeastern Peru through Bolivia, eastern and central Brazil, Paraguay, and northwestern Argentina. A 2022 paper documented the first photographic records in Misiones, Argentina.
It has a conspicuously pale belly and diagnostic white outer tail feathers. The paper's photo caption identifies the white tail feathers as a distinguishing feature.
In June 2022, an adult at an urban garden in Puerto Iguazú repeatedly visited artificial feeders and was recorded through June 15. A photograph showing pollen on its throat indicates that it also fed from natural flowers.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
