This mongoose is found in forests on Borneo and Sumatra. Much about its ecology, including its habitat preferences, remains poorly known.
A warm-brown form is common on Borneo, and an orange-red form also occurs. Records from Sumatra are few and have been of the orange-red form.
On Borneo it has been recorded in lowland and high-elevation forests, as well as burnt forest. Research is limited, so its preferred habitat is uncertain.
