This large raptor lives in forests on Java. Adults have a prominent crest and may soar above the canopy.
Adults are dark brown above, with a white, heavily marked underside and a prominent crest. Juveniles are paler tan on the head and underside, with a shorter crest.
It inhabits foothill and montane forests on Java, perching near the canopy and soaring above the forest.
