The Violet-throated Starfrontlet has a green head and chest, with an iridescent violet throat patch in males. It belongs to a hummingbird family that uses nectar and small insects.
The head and chest are green, fading to brownish green on the belly. Males have an iridescent violet throat patch. The tail is pale cinnamon in most subspecies and mostly white in the subspecies albicaudata.
Many hummingbirds feed mainly on flower nectar and also catch flying insects. Their highly maneuverable wings let them hover and fly backward.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
