A bird of shaded forest undergrowth that also visits lowlands in autumn and winter.
The flanks are yellow to orange. Mature males have blue upperparts, while females have olive-brown upperparts.
It favours the lower layers of shaded forest. It breeds in mountain forests and also occurs in warmer areas and lowlands in autumn and winter.
