This fruit bat ranges from mainland Southeast Asia to the Malay Peninsula and islands including Sumatra and Java. It has been recorded in lowland and montane forest, orchards, and agricultural areas.
The upperparts are gray-brown and the underside yellowish brown. Adult males have a dark reddish-brown neck collar, paler in females; white edges occur along the ears and wing bones.
It mainly eats fruit and also uses flowers, nectar, pollen, and leaves. In one Malaysian account, 73% of 35 recorded roosts were tent-like shelters made from banana leaves.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
