This ground-dwelling bird lives in Australian grassland and shrubland. Males have a pale stripe above the eye and a conspicuous chestnut band across the breast.
The male in Gould's original description has a pale stripe above the eye, a black throat, and a chestnut band across the breast. The original account was based on one male, so this is presented as male plumage.
BirdLife/IUCN classifies its habitat as savanna and shrubland. Gould's first record came from a scrubby tree belt on a tableland near Darling Downs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
