A barbet of the moist forests of India's Western Ghats. Adults are green, with red across the face and chest and blue-black bands.
Adults are green, with red on the face, forehead, throat, and breast; blue bands on the sides are separated from the red by black.
It favors wetter forest and avoids drier, more open habitats; it overlaps locally with Coppersmith Barbet.
It is often heard more than seen and gives a rapid series of “kuk-kuk-kuk” notes.
Juveniles are duller, with a gray rather than blue band; yellow may mix with the red feathers.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
