Stella's Lorikeet inhabits montane forest on New Guinea. It feeds on flowers and fruit, and local movement as food supplies change is considered possible.
In the nominate C. s. stellae, males have a black patch from the occiput to the hindneck streaked purple-blue, with central tail tips broadly yellow to orange; females also have yellow on the lower back and sides of the rump. C. s. goliathina has yellow central tail tips, while C. s. wahnesi has a broad yellow upper-abdomen band. A melanistic phase replaces red with black.
It feeds on blossoms, fruit, pollen and epiphytes. The account suggests possible local nomadism as food availability changes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
