A northeastern Australian forest bird that is usually solitary and territorial.
Adult males have a dark grey head and back with rusty wing edges and underparts. Females have a rufous stripe above the eye.
It is usually solitary and territorial, and moves to lower elevations in winter.
At several nests in the Paluma Range, Queensland, both sexes incubated eggs and brooded nestlings.
The fifteen nests examined in the same Paluma study were 2–9 m above ground, in sapling forks, vine tangles or on climbing-palm stems.
Adult males have a black bill. Females have a dark grey upper bill and a paler lower bill with a blue-grey base.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
