This small barbet has a red forehead and a golden wing patch. It eats mistletoe fruit and other foods, and nests in a tree hole.
The dark upperparts are streaked yellow and white; the head has a red forecrown spot and the wing a golden patch. Young birds lack the red forehead.
It occurs in forest, woodland, and scrub, eats berries and fruit—especially mistletoe—and insects, and nests in a tree hole.
