This flocking bird is found in the eastern Lesser Sundas, in open scrub, farmland, and sparsely wooded country. eBird labels it Padda fuscata, while the batch list uses Lonchura fuscata, so the genus name differs.
Adults are brown with a black cap and throat, a bold white cheek patch, a brown chest band, cream-colored underparts, and a silvery-grey bill. Young birds have an indistinct buff eyebrow, a white throat, and a reduced face patch.
Flocks use open habitats such as scrub, farmland, and sparsely wooded areas, and avoid dense forest. They sometimes mix with other local finches.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
