This sparrow is endemic to Abd al-Kuri Island. A 2008 study documents plumage differences from the related Socotra sparrow, while noting that published information on its habits is sparse.
Males have pale underparts and white cheeks. The black throat patch is confined to the bib, the median coverts have prominent white tips, and the back is browner and less heavily streaked than in the related P. insularis.
Published information on its habits is sparse. A 1903 observation cited in the paper found it on bush-covered slopes scattered with limestone blocks; a 1964 account described a bird near a north-coast settlement repeatedly returning to a single bush.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
