Kretschmer's Longbill is centered in Tanzania and also occurs in coastal forest and thickets of eastern Africa. Its long, stout bill and relatively long tail are useful field marks. It searches dense cover for small invertebrates; eye color varies among populations.
Field observers describe it as larger than congeners, with a longer, stouter bill and longer tail. Eye color varies among populations, so a single iris color should not be treated as universal.
It is difficult to find in forest edge, coastal scrub and dense vegetation, where it gleans invertebrates from foliage. Field reports from southeast Tanzania include observations in moist forest and lower vegetation.
