This bird occurs in the Nicobar Islands. A 2021 field note recorded one individual eating a fallen fig, using the older name Pitta sordida abbotti. ITIS lists Pitta abbotti as valid and the older combination as a synonym.
The 1902 original description compared an adult male with Pitta cucullata: the back and underside were darker, the upper tail- and wing-coverts lighter blue, and a dark line ran down the middle of the crown. The white patch on the primaries was smaller.
In 2021, one bird identified under the older name Pitta sordida abbotti was seen eating a fallen fig in forest on Great Nicobar Island. The paper says it is not known whether fruit forms a major part of the diet.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
