A dark waterbird widespread around lakes and coasts in North America. It dives for fish and is often seen spreading its wings to dry them.
Adults are brown-black, with yellow-orange skin around the base of the bill and face. Breeding adults grow small tufts on both sides of the head. Juveniles are browner, with a paler neck and breast.
It floats low on the water and dives for small fish. After fishing, it perches on docks, rocks, or branches and spreads its wings to dry them.
