This slim parrot has a long blue-black tail and a yellow shoulder patch. Males are mostly yellow, while females and young birds are greener. It occurs in two separated parts of southern Australia.
Males are mainly yellow, with blue-black wings and tail and red patches in the wings. Females and young birds are duller olive-green, with less prominent wing markings.
It eats grass and cereal seeds, buds, flowers, insect larvae and other small invertebrates. It often forages on the ground, but also feeds in tree canopies and on spilled grain.
