This small bird is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. Breeding males grow long tails, and the species lays eggs in other birds' nests.
Breeding males are black and white with an exceptionally long black tail. Females and nonbreeding males are brown and streaked.
It eats seeds in grassland and along farmland. During breeding, it lays its eggs in nests of estrildid finches, which raise the young.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
