At about 13 cm, it has dark brown upperparts and a white throat and belly. The grey or dull-brown breast patch varies in how far it extends onto the belly. Plumage differences are reported among the four races; this account is not assigned to a named race.
It uses swamps, pond edges, reeds, and other waterside growth. It gleans invertebrates and also makes short sallies. Fourteen breeding observations from five Gambian sites (1997–2019) recorded laying in October, November–December, and March–April.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
