This dabbling duck feeds mainly on plants in shallow wetlands. Males show an orange-red mark at the bill base and a large white wing marking.
In males, a large white area on the folded wing remains visible, and the sides of the head are buff. The orange-red bill mark is usually clearer in males.
It is mainly a plant-eating dabbling duck that favors shallow freshwater lakes and marshes with plenty of vegetation emerging above the water.
