The Blue-billed Duck is a compact diving duck adapted to life on water. Males stand out with bright blue bills and chestnut plumage.
Males have a large bright-blue bill and deep chestnut plumage; they hold the stiff tail feathers flat on the water. Females have brown bills and finely barred brown plumage.
It spends most of its time on water and dives for aquatic insects. It also eats seeds, stems, leaves, and fruit of aquatic plants. Young birds may move away from their natal swamps.
