Adult male Roosevelt’s sable are dark brown to black, with a white belly and rump; females are reddish brown. In Kenya, the form is associated with coastal woodlands and was reported only from Shimba Hills after 1994.
Dolan (1964) described adult bulls from Shimba Hills as dark seal-brown, sometimes black, with a white belly, upper inner hind legs, and rump. The white patch before the eye extends as a streak along the muzzle. The brown tail has a long black tuft. Females were bright reddish brown.
The Kenyan form is associated with the coastal miombo belt and, in Kenya, miombo-like Diospyros woodland. A 2015 review found no Kenyan reports outside Shimba Hills National Reserve after 1994; it gives the location and population records as they stood through 2015.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
