The silky pocket mouse is a small rodent with soft fur and short ears. It searches for seeds at night and carries them back to its burrow for storage.
At Colorado’s shortgrass-prairie site, Silky Pocket Mouse capture rate was significantly higher than at the cropland site. It had the highest indicator value among prairie-associated species; samples where it was recorded had an estimated 97.8% probability of belonging to the prairie group.
At night it searches for seeds, carries them to its burrow, and stores them for later. It also eats green vegetation, juniper berries, and occasionally invertebrates.
Its fur is soft and silky, and its ears and tail are short. The upperparts are pinkish buff mixed with black, the underside is white, and a pale buff patch lies behind the ear.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
