This ground robin is known from high montane forests of New Guinea. One bird was recorded on the Huon Peninsula in 2011, and researchers noted that it might differ in size from known populations.
The Huon Peninsula bird had a black bill, brown irises and pink legs. The paper says it appeared smaller than individuals from the Central Ranges.
The species is known from high montane forest. The Huon Peninsula bird was caught at 2,710 m, but that single record does not define the species' full habitat range.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
