This tanager inhabits forest and forest edges in eastern Brazil. It feeds on fruit, flower buds and small animals.
It is about 18 cm long, with dark blue-grey plumage and yellow areas on the wings.
It uses forest edges and secondary growth, feeding on fruit, epiphytes and flower buds as well as insects, spiders and other arthropods. A breeding account reports a female incubating two to three eggs; both parents fed the young, which left the nest at about 18 days.
