Several subspecies occur in Central and South American mountains. Plumage varies by sex and region; the adult male is used as an example.
The adult male has a black face and throat, yellow bill, and orange-red eye ring. Its back is green to bronze, and a white band separates it from the red belly.
It favors wet, misty mountain forest but also uses secondary and more open forest. It occurs at 700–3,600 m and eats fruit and a variety of insects.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
