Dark-winged Canastero is an Andean species recognized after a former broad species was split. One bird recorded in Chile had a rufous rump and vent.
A photographed individual in Chile was described as brown on the head and back, with a gray eyebrow, dark wings and tail, and a rufous rump, vent, and undertail.
The species account places it in Polylepis groves and nearby montane scrub, including arid scrub with scattered cacti.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
