This small bird has a red upper body and dark face, and uses open woodland and grassy rocky places.
The upperparts are red and the wings dark brown. The head through upper breast is dark grey, with a pink eye-ring; the lower breast and belly are black, with white spots on the flanks.
It uses open grassy woodland and grass-covered rocky outcrops. It feeds on the ground on small grass seeds and insects.
The bill is black.
