This flycatcher ranges widely from West to East Africa. It searches for insects in forest and woodland, along rivers and in farmland, and builds a low nest.
The adult male is glossy black above and white below, with a black breast band. A white wingbar and fleshy red wattles above the eye are distinctive.
It occurs in gallery forest, savanna woodland, mature mangroves, riverbanks, gardens and farmland. It eats insects and builds a cup nest low in a bush or tree from lichen and cobwebs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
