This small waxbill occurs in dry scrub from Ethiopia to Tanzania. It feeds on grass seeds and other small foods near the ground.
It is about 11–12 cm long. A black cheek patch and fine streaking on the wings are useful identification marks.
Seeds are a main food, with insects, fruit, and flowers also recorded. At the Kenyan site, pairs and small groups forage on the ground.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
