This small flycatcher inhabits humid montane forest from Central America into the northern Andes. It forages below the canopy, catching insects in flight or from foliage.
It has a dark slaty cap, a gray-olive back and wings, and underparts that grade from olive to yellow. A black patch marks the area behind the eye. The pale wing bars vary in color across regions.
In the middle and subcanopy layers of humid montane forest, it catches insects in the air or gleans them from foliage. It may join mixed-species flocks.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
