This Australian falcon varies widely in the darkness of its plumage. It scans from a perch in grassland or farmland, then dives on prey when it spots an opportunity.
Plumage ranges from very dark to light brown. Birds are usually dark brown above and pale buff or cream below; females are larger than males and have a tear-shaped mark below the eye.
It searches for prey from an exposed perch such as a tree or pole, then swoops down to seize it. Its prey includes small mammals, insects, and reptiles.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
